Topaz in it’s pure form is actually colorless, it’s the impurities that give a topaz it’s color. Blue topaz can occur naturally although it’s quite rare. Most colored topaz you see will have been treated to give it that color. Don’t let that put you off the topaz is a beautiful gemstone. Topaz can be found all around the world however it is a gemstone and needs to be mined like any other stone. In a particular Brazilian mine the topaz can come out of the rock in enormous boulder sized chunks. There have been topaz observed by Jean Baptiste Tavernier of over 157 carats.

One of the largest faceted type of gems in the world is a natural yellow topaz. It has over 22,000 carats and weighs over 4 kg (8.8 lbs). It’s a beautiful stone and is called the American Golden Topaz and can be found in the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. where it is displayed. Blue topaz is the birthstone of December and any December lady would be delighted to receive a blue topaz bracelet.
